P. Kulish in the Intellectual Environment of the Russian Empire from the 1840s to the Early 1850s

The purpose is to cover the beginnings of P. Kulish’s formation as one of the leaders of the Ukrainian national revival and the peculiarities of its integration into the intellectual movement of the Russian Empire. The methodological basis consists of a prosopographical approach and the tools of intellectual history, social history, historical psycholog y, and oral history studies. The scientific novelty lies in determining the influence of representatives of the Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian scientific communities on the formation of P. Kulish’s scientific worldview and the development of his creative path. The beginnings of the formation of the creative path of the figure in connection with his individual and psychological characteristics are highlighted. The ways and methods of building a creative career are analyzed. Main results. The intellectual phenomenon of P. Kulish lies in the fact that he was shaped in various ethnocultural environments and easily absorbed the values and experiences of world culture. His character was dominated by aristocratism, spirituality, emotionality, and leadership qualities. Psychological and ideological conflicts with the sociocultural environment conditioned the creative crises of the figure. The figure of P. Kulish as an artist and a person is filled with contradictions and contrasts, and therefore, is surrounded by numerous myths, making its understanding require systemic and interdisciplinary studies.
