Murders of People with Disabilities in Ukraine during the Nazi Occupation: Victim Groups, Perpetrators and Circumstances of Extermination

The purpose: to analyse the specifi cs of the policy of murder of people with diseases and disa bilities during the Nazi occupation of Ukraine. The objectives of the article are as follows: to identify the main groups of people who were killed for medical-social reasons in the occupied territory of Ukraine, to characterise the peculiarities of the planning and execution of people with diff erent categories of diseases, to distinguish aspects that require further analysis and study.
The scientific contribution lies in formulating the question of the German occupation authorities’ attitude to people with diseases and disabilities, identifying the main groups of patients who were subjected to particularly severe persecution, and bringing to light a number of new sources from Ukrainian and foreign archives.
Conclusions. It was found that at least 9,000 patients of psychiatric clinics, hundreds of people with infectious diseases, such as typhus, tuberculosis, venereal diseases, and the elderly with chronic diseases and disabilities, were victims of the Nazi crimes. Hundreds of Ukrainian civilians who became ill during their forced labour in Germany were killed in the course of the so-called “decentralised euthanasia”. As a result of the reduced or deprived food supply, limited access to medical care, and worsening sanitary and epidemiological conditions, thousands of babies and young infants became victims of the occupation in orphanages and shelters. The Einsatz and Sonderkommando of the Security Police and the Security Service played a key role in the killings of people with diseases and disabilities in the occupied territory of Ukraine. The Wehrmacht, civilian and military administration, and German and Ukrainian police also took part in organizing and sometimes carrying out the killings. In some cases, local medical personnel also assisted in the identifi cation of people with diseases and the organisation of murders. Perspectives for further research include the use of materials from both Ukrainian and foreign central and regional archives, as well as internal archives and the consideration of local contexts. The following aspects require additional research: survival and rescue strategies for people with diseases and disabilities, the murders of Ukrainian citizens who suff ered from psychoneurological or infectious diseases during forced labour in Germany, similarities and diff e rences in the policies towards people with diseases and disa bilities in diff erent occupation zones, and the characteristics of post-war criminal prosecution of those responsible for the murders.
