Student Audience of M. Hrushevskyi at Lviv University: Quantitative Dynamics, Ethnic Composition, Didactic Preferences

Abstract

The purpose is to find out the quantitative parameters, the dynamics of enrolment, and the ethnic composition of the student audience of M. Hrushevskyi at Lviv University.

The methodological basis is an interdisciplinary approach. Particular emphasis is made on the structural-functional systematic analysis of historiographical facts and the comparative-historical method from the perspective of the principles of impartiality and historicism.

The scientific novelty lies in an attempt to comprehensively analyse the student audience of M. Hrushevskyi at Lviv University.

Conclusions. It has been proven that the student catalogues of Lviv University are the most important source for elucidating the specifics of the scientific and pedagogical work of M. Hrushevskyi during the Halychyna period of his life. The importance of this document lies in the fact that thanks to its informational potential, the issues, the discussion of which was previously dominated by an emotional and speculative component, have now received a factual basis for a comprehensive historiographical analysis. The studied catalogues convincingly certify M. Hrushevskyi as a popular teacher not only among Ukrainian but also Polish and Jewish youth. Most of its representatives became notable figures of that time, popularizing or transforming the historical knowledge acquired as a student. It was also possible to find out the national and gender specifics of the student audience of the Ukrainian professor, reconstruct the diversity of his didactic proposals, trace the frequency of attendance at various courses, etc. Thanks to the processing of the dean’s student catalogues, we can certify M. Hrushevskyi as an authoritative and sought-after representative of the Lviv University corporation.
