Abstract

In the article of the first editor-in-chief of the "Ukrainian Historical Journal" F.Shevchenko was covered a unique vision of the appointment and specialty of a historian associated with the reconceptualization of the old idea of a "court of history". Author advocated the thesis of the moral and professional duty of the historian to observe in the coverage and representations of the past of professional canons. In particular objectivity, impartiality and factual reliability. The article expressed an opinion about the probabilistic and even paradoxical nature of historical knowledge, which does not necessarily correlate with the "laws of historical development", outlined by the canons of "historical materialism".
