The Image of a Ukrainian Intellectual of the 19th Century. (Mykola Kostomarov)

On example of the personality of eminent Ukrainian scientist-humanist and public figure M.Kostomarov in this article lightens up the abstract image of the intellectual of the 19th century. The main attention is paid to the key events of his biography. Those events were the demonstrative for the understanding of his origin, character, worldview, sociocultural environment, public conduct, relationships with relatives, friends, authorities and their attitude to the oeuvre. The analysis involved the sources of personal origin, modern historical, historiographical and belletristic literature. Author evaluated to some discussion problems that exists around M.Kostovarov’s image for long time. Moreover, author actualized the reasons for recast of the intellectual biography of the scientist to fit the times.
