The Situation of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and Its Followers in the Polish People’s Republic (Late 1940s – Early 1990s)

The purpose of the research is to discuss the main activities of the clergy and the faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church after the deportation of the Ukrainian population to the western and northern parts of Poland in 1947.
The research methodology. Criticism of both archival and published sources including the established views in the historiography constitute the main methods of this historical research. Bibliographic analysis, including that of Polish historiography as well as statistical, geographical and sociological methods of analysis were also used.
The scientific novelty. The situation of Greek Catholics in the Polish People’ Republic and their desire to resume the activities of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is a topic that is poorly covered in the publications that have appeared in Ukraine. In Poland, in fact, only historians of Ukrainian origin deal with this question. However, no monograph has come out that would comprehensively cover the fate of the Greek Catholic Church in the period of People’s Poland.
Conclusions. After World War II, the communist authorities in Poland aimed to eradicate the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church from Poland following the footsteps of the USSR. Unlike the Soviet authorities, the Polish Communists claimed that the deportation of the Ukrainian population to Soviet Ukraine as well as to western and northern Poland as part of the Vistula Action, finally would solve the problem of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The authorities did not legally recognize it, but in fact it existed, though without structures, hierarchs and property. Its existence was possible, in principle, only with the involvement of the faithful and some priests who did not want to leave their native rite. They began to try to resume the activities of their Church not only in the new place of settlement after the deportation, but also in their native lands. However, this was opposed by the communist government, which helped the Polish Orthodox Church to intercept Greek Catholics. In turn, the attitude of Roman Catholic clergy and the hierarchs toward the Greek Catholic varied considerably. Some would welcome the liquidation of this rite, while others helped in its restoration. The role of Pope John Paul II was invaluable. He supported the Greek Catholics as well as some of the Roman Catholic hierarchs and Polish priests who provided the Greek Catholics with hospitality and allowed them to establish Greek Catholic institutions which were parishes in fact. The above mentioned factors made legal reactivation of the Greek Catholic Church in Poland after 1989 possible as well as its further development.
