The purpose of the study is to clarify the features of German documents of the World War II as historical sources that influence their archaeographic processing in preparation for the scientific publication.
The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism and scientific objectivity, methods of analysis, synthesis, chronological and historical-comparative methods are used, as well as special methods of source studies, archival heuristics, archaeography and document studies.
The scientific novelty is due to the lack of approved rules of publishing foreign-language historical documents in Ukrainian (there are only recommendations), while further expansion of the source base on the history of World War II is topical.
Conclusions. For decades, German documents from the World War II, published in Soviet collections of documents, were almost the only available German-language sources on the history of the war and occupation for Soviet researchers, but the content of such collections was ideologized and thematically limited. But even today, a number of documentary collections in Ukraine do not meet the criteria of academic documentary publications due to the neglect of the features of the publication of German documents from the World War II period. These features are determined, first of all, by the official character of these documents, both civil administration and military, the specifics of German clerical work, for example, the use of a large number of reference numbers, abbreviated names of institutions, military units, positions, ranks, as well as the presence in the documents of a large number of obsolete words. It is possible to avoid the loss of initial information when publishing German documents of the World War II by using an integrated approach to archaeographic processing, which requires the researcher not only to have a deep knowledge of the German language, but also knowledge of the history of this war, an understanding of the general historical context, as well as knowledge of the branches of special historical disciplines – source studies, archival science, archaeography.
