Abstract

The purpose of the research is to find out the peculiarities of the organization and functioning of the charity support system during the Great War in the city of Sumy.

The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, impartiality, comprehensiveness and integrity, and systematicity, as well as the use of descriptive, historical-genetic, historical-typological, and problem-chronological methods.

The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time, certain aspects of charity activity in the territory of Sumy County during the World War I are highlighted (in particular, the charity activities of Polish organizations, the Sumy Council of Workers and Soldiers Deputies, the peasantry), a generalized and systematized idea of participants, directions, and means of charity action, many previously unknown facts from the history of charity activity in the region were discovered.

Conclusions. The structure of the charity action in Sumy County initially developed based on existing local authorities and pre-war organizations (Red Cross branch, Society for the Care of the Poor). Gradually, the list of charity associations increased in the content of their activities. New structures of power and self-organization of the population after the overthrow of the monarchy also became involved in charity work. The areas of charity activity were: providing assistance to the front and front-line soldiers; assistance to mem bers of their families who remained behind; assistance to wounded soldiers; assistance to vulnerable groups of the civilian population; assistance to educational institutions and students; assistance to refugees. The most common form of assistance was monetary aid. The mass number of volunteers and various ways of mobilizing funds for charities led to a sufficiently high efficiency of the charity action, capable of responding to various social challenges provoked by the war.
