Historical writing of the late P. Kulish as a precursor of the conservative project of Ukrainian historiography of the early 20th century. (To the 200th anniversary of his birth)

The purpose of the research is to analyze the historical writing of the late P.Kulish. The research methodology is based on the strategies of comparison and typology. The scientific novelty is related to the study of socio-cultural contexts and intellectual influences on the historical narrative of the late P.Kulish. The article shows that in the Ukrainian historiography P.Kulish had mainly the reputation of intellectual destructor. It is noted that the works of P.Kulish and still used to popularize the concept of "reunification". Educational, romantic and positivist influences on the texts and practices of P.Kulish are considered. It is emphasized that in the field of Ukrainian historiography P.Kulish actually held the position of a private scientist. In addition, P.Kulish was known as an original writer, critic, reviewer, translator, publicist and popularizer. There is an opinion about selective and limited reception of positivism in P.Kulish’s studios. It is noted that P.Kulish mainly perceived positivism from a cultural and spiritual perspective. The historical wring of P.Kulish is analyzed from the perspective of conservative ideals, cognitive instructions and ideological orientations. The conservative tradition in the representation of the figure of P.Kulish is considered. The conceptual proposals of P.Kulish and V.Lypynskyi as conservatives are compared. Conclusions. It is noted that P.Kulish and V.Lypynskyi have a number of similar features, such as the search for an organic social ideal, the defence of traditional, pre-industrial values, the representation of the conflict between culture and civilization, the appeal to moral, ethical and religious values, the dualistic division of the world into the natural-material and ideal-spiritual spheres, etc. It is proved that it is appropriate to represent Kulish as a complex and controversial forerunner of the conservative project of Ukrainian historiography of the early twentieth century.
