Senators of the Ruthenian, Podoliaian and Belz Voivodeships at the Lublin Diet of 1569

The paper addresses participation of senators from three voivodeships – Ruthenian, Podolian, and Belz – in the Lublin sejm of 1569. The sejm, which started on January 10 and lasted till August 15 in 1569, marked the history with a conclusion of the union between the Polish Kingdom and the Great Duchy of Lithuania. Practically every study of the union and that time presents the incorporation of Volyn, Kyiv land, and Bratslav land as the main outcome of the sejm that led to the consolidation of Ukrainian lands within the Polish Kingdom. This fact became the main one in narrating the results of the Lublin sejm of 1569 in Ukrainian historiography. So far, there are no studies that address the position of senators and sejm members from the Ruthenian voivodeships of the Crown. At the moment of concluding the union, these voivodeships had over-a-hundred-year practice of participating in the Crown assembles and sejms. This paper demonstrates who could represent the Ruthenian voivodeships in the senat. Church hierarchs and secular high officials could serve as senators. Catholic hierarchs included Lviv archbishop, and Peremyshl, Kholm, and Kamianets bishops. Secular senators included Ruthenian, Podolian, and Belz voivodes, Lviv, Kamianets, Belz, Peremyshl, Halych, Kholm, Sanok, and Liubach castellains. Not all of them, for objective reasons, could participate in the sejm. Those senators who did participate did not stand out as active contributors, as shown in the two sejm diaries. The counsel of Ruthenian senators dated February 8, 1569 had an important impact. All of them supported the union and the incorporation of Volyn, Kyiv land, and Bratslav land on the king’s terms. Their addresses at the sejm represented the position of wealthy gentry who served as officers in the Ruthenian voivodeships and took a pro-Crown and pro-king stand, but also took into account some local and regional specifics.
