History and present of the archive of Ukrainian academic science

The purpose of the research is to analyse of history creating the Institute of Archival Studies of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, it activity at present and role in the formation of the archival fund of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, social approach and alternative. The following general historical methods are used: historiographical, analytical-synthetic and historical-comparative, the method of external and internal criticism of sources. The scientific novelty: this is the first time а wide range of published and unpublished sources was used to research the history of creation and activity of the main archival unit in the system of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine - the Institute of Archival Studies of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. Conclusions. The history of the Institute of Archival Studies of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, his activity at present and his role in the formation of archival fund has been analyzed. The forming process of archival fund of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine at the beginning it activity has gone a way to accumulate documents in institutions unsystematically. The first time the integraled set of documents about history and activity NAS of Ukraine was formed at the beginning of 1930`. At this time the structure of NAS of Ukraine was changed that`s why a big part of documents has been transferred for storage to the manuscripts department of VNLU. The opportunity to create of the main archival institution in the system of NAS of Ukraine in second part of 1940` wasn`t accomplished. Activity format of future general academic archival unit and its main goals has been created at the middle of 1950`. Among them a formation of documentary collections were created by famous scientists and academic institutions and function of methodical control of archival working in institutions of NAS of Ukraine, too. Chief scientific secretary of Presidium of NAS of Ukraine controlled all questions of academic archival activity. One the way to fill the archival fund was creating special expert commission to purchasing the archival documents from individuals. The Institute of Archival Studies of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine – main archival department in the system of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was created only in 1968 as the Central Scientific Archive of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The Institute provides methodological assistance in questions of scientific and technical regulation, storage, accounting and use of documents of institutions and organizations of NAS of Ukraine, of personal documents of academicians, correspondent members and prominent scholars whose documents are important for the study of the history of Ukrainian science, technology and culture. Also the Institute provides methodological assistance in controlling the state of documenting the scientific organizational activities of academic institutions and to use of documents with a scientific and socio-cultural purpose. The result of the Institute's activity is to create a clear structure in the system of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine that forms its archival fund as part of the National Archival Fond, to provide methodological support for their activities, to determine the structure of the archival fund of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The Institute's activities stage are aimed at the active introduction of information technologies in order to include the archival heritage of Ukrainian science in the world electronic information space at the present.
