Abstract

The activities of the All-Russian Railway Union and its interaction with the authorities in the Russian Ukraine in 1905–1908 were highlighted. It is the purpose of the paperto clear up the circumstances of railmen’s self- organization into the Union and the transformation of its manner of activity. Historiographically this issue is scantil explored. The originality of the study is ensured with the usage of the domestic and foreign archives scientific materials. The study revealed that the organization was of a professional and political nature, since its program combined the requirements of therailwaymen’s economic and legal status with  the claims for political freedoms and the convocation of the Constituent Assembly. The Union played an important role during the First Russian Revolution, especially during the general political strike, becoming one of the key factors that forced the Russian emperor to sign the Manifesto in October 17, 1905. After the failure of the December armed uprising, the authorities began to close the cells of the Union prosecuting its activists. In 1906–1908, the Unionacted conscientiously, was subjected to constant persecution and the influence of revolutionary parties. In general, the organization contributed to the involvement of the broad masses of railroads in the struggle for political and professional rights in 1905–1908. Prospects for further research are the characteristics of the activities of the Union’s branches on individual railways.
