Abstract

The article deals with the main statistical data on the number of Ukrainians in the MIA Special Camps of the Gulag of the USSR from 1950 to 1954. This data indicate that Ukrainian prisoners accounted for almost half of the camp contingent of special camps. They differed from other political prisoners by their cohesiveness, had experience in engaging in hostilities, an uncompromising anti-Soviet stand. It is with this circumstance that the author relates continuous actions of disobedience at prisoners that took place in special camps: strikes, starvation, refusal of work and armed resistance of the camp administration. The organizers this actions of disobedience at prisoners were former members of the OUN and members of the anti-Soviet insurrection movement in West of Ukraine. The immediate consequence of these actions was a series of uprisings in special camps in 1953–1954 and the collapse of the Gulag system.
