The article is timed to the 140th anniversary of the birthday and the 80th anniversary of the death of S.Rudnyts’kyi and is devoted to the analysis of the first works of the researcher on the early history of the Cossacks, written under the influence and guidance of M.Hrushevs’kyi. The contribution of a well-known geographer to the development of historiography of the history of the Cossacks is insignificant, but content-qualitative, so deserves attention for a worthy evaluation.
