Abstract

The purpose of the study is to analyze and systematize the epistolary sources Ukrainian activists that were provided by the library at the National Ossoliński Institute in Wrocław; to explore its informative potential for the study of Ukrainian-Polish relationships of the 19th – first half of the 20th century.

The methodological basis of the work is an interdisciplinary approach. At the same time, methods of philosophical, general-scientific and specific-historical character are applied as well. Particular emphasis is placed on the structural and functional system analysis of historiographical facts and the method of critical analysis of documentary material.

Scientific novelty it is the first attempt to describe and systematize letters from Ukrainian intellectuals to Polish colleagues, which had been stored in the manuscripts department of the library at the National Ossoliński Institute in Wrocław. The study has also explored their informative potential for the study of Ukrainian-Polish relationships in the 19th – first half of the 20th century.

Conclusions. The found archival documents proved richness and diversity of Ukrainian-Polish intellectual dialogue during the 19th – first half of the 20th century. It has been emphasised that without careful elaboration and comprehension of these materials, it is impossible not only to reconstruct the Ukrainian-Polish cultural relations in a balanced way, but also to partly understand many purely Ukrainian aspects of the intellectual history of East Central Europe. With a few exceptions, the found documents are largely unknown to Ukrainian researchers. It has been noted that the review is far from being exhaustive: some archival funds are still waiting for processing and cataloging, some require a comprehensive description of the collection of accessing materials, after all, the discussion of Ukrainian topics is often found in purely Polish documents. The realization of these tasks will bring the researchers closer to the creation of a consolidated catalog of Ukrainian Studies in Ossolineum.
