Abstract

The purpose of the article is to elucidate and generalize the cultural and educational activity of the Orthodox clergy and national intelligentsia of the Right-Bank Ukraine in the second half of the nineteenth – the early of the twentieth centuries, find out its role in the preservation and popularization of the Ukrainian national cultural acquisitions, and restrain the process of Russification. During the study, the complex use of the methods of comparison, logical analysis, synthesis, and generalization were used.

The scientific novelty consists in the fact that little known archive sources that disclose the activity of the Orthodox clergy and national intelligentsia in creating libraries and spreading the Ukrainian literature, as well as conducting folklore and ethnographic studies by them were introduced in scientific circulation. The cooperation of the clergy representatives with the political figures of the Ukrainian national movement in questions dealing with the organization of folklore and ethnographic expeditions, work of libraries and repositories of antiquities has been analyzed.

It has been stated in the conclusions that creating repositories of antiquities and developing museum studies by the church authorities and clerical and historical associations were the important acquisition in cultural activity of the Orthodox clergy and national intelligentsia. During the second half of the nineteenth – the early of the twentieth centuries conducted systemic work to collect, study, and publish the Ukrainian customs and traditional ceremonies, found and develop libraries as a whole. In Kyiv Theological Academy and Podillia Theological Seminary, secret libraries functioned, in which narodniks (populist) and socialist publications, the works by T.Shevchenko, S.Rudanskyi, and other Ukrainian authors were spread. The activity of patriotic clergy representatives and national intelligentsia in these and other cultural and educational fields affected considerably the development of the national culture.
