The article highlights current information on international sources of grant funding for basic cancer research and analyzes the opportunities and obstacles for obtaining such support by Ukrainian scientists. Review of foreign scientific papers and Internet resources, which are surveing international cancer research organizations, foundations and grant programs, is completed. While there are a significant number of public and private organizations and foundations in the developed world that provide grants for cancer research, Ukrainian scientists are still not actively using these opportunities. Aim: an analytical review of international grant sources of funding for basic research in oncology and assessment of potential opportunities for their use by Ukrainian scientists. Results: the list of the main grant providers in the USA and the European Union has been obtained. The requirements of main Western foundations and programs, where Ukrainian scientists could submit grant applications for basic cancer research, have been analyzed. The performed study revealed that despite the large number of international grant providers, only a few of them considered foreign research institutions as potential recipients of financial support. Conclusions: based on the analysis of major organizations in the US and the EU that are ready to accept proposals from foreign research institutions, it was found that in the US it is the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Fogarty International Center, and in the EU it is the Horizon Europe program. By the end of 2020 Horizon Europe will start announcing competitions for cancer research for 2021–2027 providing potential opportunities for international cancer research projects in Ukraine.
