Abstract

Summary. The principal provisions of the 2016 revision
to the World Health Organization classification of myeloid neoplasms and acute leukemia, namely revisions to
the categories of myeloid neoplasms and acute leukemia
have been considered. The major changes in the classification have been presented as compared with WHO
classification of tumors of hematopoietic and lymphoid
tissues published in 2008. The principal forms of myeloproliferative neoplasms and acute leukemia according to
the revised classification have been listed and the major criteria for their diagnosis have been considered.
The disease entities are defined based on histogenetic
principles for ascertaining the lineage of the transformed
cells and their differentiation level taking into account
the recent findings on the cytogenetic and molecular biological abnormalities in the blast cells. The use of the
revised classification allows one for diagnosing precisely myeloid neoplasms and acute leukemia contributing
to the improvement of their therapies.
