Abstract

The modern edition of “Cytomorphological diagnostics of human tumors” (hereinafter referred to as the Manual) is the first book of its kind in Ukraine, written in the state language. The manual states that the cytological method (along with the histological method) is a reliable morphological method for verifying pathological processes that are based on a morphological substance. The cytological method allows diagnosing oncological diseases not only in a formed tumor, but also at the stage of precancer (moderate and severe dysplasia), which allows using this method for screening malignant neoplasms. The famous European cytopathologist P.L. Cardozo (1976) argued that “Cytology as the safest method” is based on the assessment of multiple cell characteristics, such as size, shape, tinctorial signs of the cytoplasm, nucleus and nucleolus and the degree of their severity in certain tumors. In European countries and the USA, cytological and histological diagnostic data are used in combination to determine a more accurate morphological diagnosis.
