The goal is to study the origin of the Princes of Stepan, analyze references to members of the family, and find out the time and reason for the confiscation of the Stepan district. The methodology is based on the principles of scientific impartiality and uses such methods as historical and chronological, comparative historical, textual analysis, and retrospective analysis. Scientific novelty. Arguments are presented against the belonging of the Princes of Stepan to the Gediminids dynasty. A hypothesis is proposed about their marriage with the Princes of Holshany, somewhere around 1400. The probable time and circumstances under which Stepan came into the possession of the Holshany Princes are specified. Conclusions. The early Princes of Stepan (13th century) came from the Turovo-Pinsk branch of the Rurikids. In the author’s opinion, this family could have continued to exist as part of the Lithuanian State. Semen Stepanskyi, mentioned in 1387, should be identified with Semen Ivanovych, who in 1388 had some connection to Volyn and used a seal with the hippocentaur emblem. Probably around 1400, one of Stepan’s Princes married the daughter of Prince Ivan of Holshany, the governor of Kyiv. It was as a result of this marriage that the Holshanski’s borrowed the heraldic emblem hippocentaur from the Stepanski’s (between 1401 and 1422). The male line of the Princes of Stepan was cut off in the 1440s. And their rightful heir, Mariia Mykhailivna, was deprived of the right to Stepan in connection with the events of the end of 1453, when the young Duchess’s father-in-law and stepfather were arrested and accused of organizing an anti- Lithuanian conspiracy in Volyn. After that, the Stepan was granted to Prince Yurii of Holshany, a Lithuanian aristocrat and, according to the author, a relative of the Stepan Princes.
