Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky and the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences: the problem of finding a president

Based on the analysis of a wide range of sources, the article highlights the question of the role of Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi in defining the candidacy of the first HeadPresident by the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences created in November 1918. It was noted that Hetman himself regarded M.Hrushevskyi as a priority candidate for this post, but M.Hrushevskyi strongly rejected the post for personal, political reasons and conceptual differences with V.Vernadskyi concerning the academic model. Therefore, V.Vernadskyi became the first president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences as a recognized organizer and reformer of science, the main engine of the "academic revolution". Also the historian D.Bahalii, who enjoyed extraordinary authority from the Hetman and among the national opposition, could be among the likely candidates on this post. Kharkiv historian refused all proposals to take a high state post and, apparently, the Academy of Sciences. One could also talk about the appointment as the president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences of M.Vasylenko, who was indeed elected the second head of the Academy after V.Vernadskyi. But at the time of the creation of the Academy, he could not accept such a proposal for moral reasons.
