The purpose is to review scientific works devoted to the study of the origin and nature of Basque nationalism and to systematize and classify the main areas of research on the history of the Basque nationalist movement in Spain. The task was to study research narrative strategies, outline the main research results on this issue, and determine the objectivity of research conclusions and generalizations.
The scientific novelty lies in clarifying the current historiographical situation, problems, and achievements of research on Basque nationalism.
The main results. Having analyzed the scientific works of foreign and domestic scientists, the author determined the uneven coverage in the historiography of individual segments of the history of the formation and development of the Basque nationalist movement in Spain. The terrorist activities of its radical currents attracted the main attention of researchers. Most of the works are devoted to the study of the evolution of the strategy and tactics of armed struggle and the description of the mechanisms and ways of conflict resolution. Not sufficiently fully disclosed the metasystemic essence of the Basque national project, its political and economic goals, and consequences for the region. The identified historiographical gaps and shortcomings allowed us to outline the perspective and identify specific ways of further developing this issue.
