Abstract

This edition presents the most comprehensive analysis of academic science activities on a global scale conducted over recent decades. Its structure offers an in-depth understanding of national academic organizations that represent their countries’ science systems in international scientific bodies, particularly through the principle of “one country — one academy,” as seen in the International Association of Academies of Sciences. The book serves as a valuable evidence-based and analytical resource, especially in the context of challenges currently faced by Ukraine’s academic science sector. In developing approaches to these challenges, the authors justifiably draw on Humboldt’s concept of academic science as comprising three main components: academies of sciences, universities, and independent research institutes not engaged in student education. A notable feature of the study is its use of a geographical classification of contemporary academic science. This perspective highlights the specific opportunities for academic science development during the transition to a post-industrial, information-based society shaped by globalization in the information sphere. It also underscores the importance of preserving national scientific traditions. The authors convincingly argue that reforming modern academic science must be grounded in the principle of public funding for basic research, as such research forms the backbone of innovation-driven societal progress. An important section of the book is dedicated to the activities of academic organizations of young researchers worldwide. This material lays the foundation for further analysis of the unique features and internal dynamics of academic science systems across different regions.
