Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic Iosyp Zakharovych Shtokalo: Mathematician and Founder of Science and Technology History in Ukraine (the 125th Anniversary of Birth)

The article provides details of Iosyp Shtokalo’s university and post-graduate education, phases of his scientific carrier in research institutions of Kyiv, themes of his principal scientific works. I. Shtokalo had been working on the refinement of the Ukrainian scientific terminology since 1940s, presided over the Terminological Commission created by the Presidion of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Ukraine (AS SU) in 1957—1967, edited a series of the published terminological glossaries. He began to work in the field of mathematics history in 1947. The department of mathematics history created in the Institute of Mathematics of AS SU in 1956 was supervised by I. Shtokalo in 1956—1963. In 1958, I. Shtokalo was elected as vice president of the Committee of the Ukrainian division of the Soviet National Association of Historians in Natural Science and Technology, and supervisor of the Unit for Mathematics History within it. The Unit for History of Natural Sciences of Technology was created within the Department of Mathematics History and the Department of Science and Technology History in the Institute of History of AS SU, presided by I. Shtokalo till April 9, 1986. I. Shtocalo was elected as a correspondent member of the International Academy of the History of Science in 1965, and as an honorary member in 1978, for his science history works. The article provides a detailed list of the main scientific works of I. Shtokalo.
