February 5 marked the 85th anniversary of Olexandr Kornienko, doctor in history, an outstanding expert in welding and science and technology history. The research carrier of O. Kornienko started in Paton Welding Institute, where he entered a post-graduate course in 1963. An organizer of science and technology museums since early 1980s, in 1981—1986 he supervised the Department of Science & Technology Information at Paton Welding Institute. In 1987—1998 he supervised the Laboratory of Historic and Retrospective Analysis. He consulted the editors of “Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia” and “Great Soviet Encyclopedia”. O. Kornienko developed a method for analysis of inventions and innovative manufacturing technologies, based on determining their substantial elements and parameters of energy’s impact on input material, and their impact on science & technology progress. This method was used by O. Kornienko to determine the Ukraine’s contribution in the global economy, in particular for justifying the Ukraine’s priority in creating the contemporary welding industry, which was acknowledged by inclusion in “UNESCO Calendar of Memorial Dates”. Research and organizational effort was combined by O. Kornienko with teaching. In 2009, he defended the dissertation “Formation and development of welding production in Ukraine in the global context” and obtained the degree of doctor in history. Since 2017, he has been in staff of Dobrov Institute for Scientific and Technological Potential and Science History Studies of NAS of Ukraine, as chief researcher.
