Abstract

Ivan Puliuy was born in Ternopil region. His works on physics contained rediscovery of X-rays (1896); devices designed by him hot awards at worldwide and international exhibitions, and his inventions in electrical engineering and telephony were patented in advanced countries of Europe. Continuing the work on preparing Ukrainian-language textbooks for secondary schools and gymnasiums, started in the gymnasium, Ivan Puliuy began to implement a great design: a Ukrainian-language edition of religious literature. After graduation, in 1872, of the natural science department of the philosophic faculty, Ivan Puliuy, as the best graduate, was left for research work at the physical laboratory of the university. In 1876 I. Puliuy Puliuy defended the thesis for the degree of doctor philosophiae naturalis and came back to the Wien University, where he taught the kinetic molecular theory of gases and the theory of heat. Special emphasis should be placed in the Puliuy’s activities in electric energy. Beginning with 90s of the past century, he became the most authoritative expert in design and construction of electric power plants and electric networks on the Czech territory. I. Puliuy never forgot about educational needs of his nation. When the statute of the Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society (ShSS) in Lviv was adopted in 1892, he published scientific and science popular articles in “Scientific Notes of ShSS”, developed the Ukrainian scientific and technical terminology. His name was among the first acting members of ShSS (1899).
