Strategic management of the development of research universities

Abstract

A conceptualization of the theory and methodology of strategic management is important and necessary for modern Ukraine given its course to the European and global integration and the urgent need in radical reforms of the socio-economic system and the system of education that is responsible for future development of the Ukrainian society. Yet, the role of research universities for the successful reform in Ukraine on the basis of best European and global approaches and practices has been undervalued and needs in-depth rethinking, to use their capacities in the economic development of Ukraine. The first section of this monograph elaborates on a theoretical framework for strategic management of research universities. The second section contains a review of global practices of strategic management of world-class universities. The third section is devoted to the system for evaluation of research universities development. The fourth section sums up best practices of operating business schools in the research university context. The fifth section elaborates on the patterns of strategic development of scientific libraries in research universities. The sixth section is focused on the implementation of strategic management tools in the practices of research university management in Ukraine. The scientific views of the author set out in the monograph reflect innovative insights pertaining to the strategic management system in research universities of Ukraine in the context of implementing international practices. They invite one to rethink the contemporary role of Ukrainian research universities in the global competitive environment of education and research services, and to seek for effective ways for enhancing their international competitiveness.
