Abstract

A next session of the National Council on Science of Science at the International Association of Academies of Sciences was held in Kyiv, on December 6, 2018. In these days (December 6–7, 2018), the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine hosted ceremonial events devoted to the 100th anniversary of the NAS of Ukraine and the 100th anniversary of its president Borys Paton, an outstanding scientist and organizer of science system. A review of the National Council’s agenda and its decisions is given. An extensive review of the opening address delivered by Borys Malitsky, director of Dobrov Institute for Scientific and Technological Potential and Science History Studies of the NAS of Ukraine, head of the Scientific Council, is provided. The speaker elaborated on the history of creation of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, the special role of its first president Volodymyr Vernadsky, and “Paton” era in the history of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, started in 1962. Borys Malitsky stressed that under the leadership of this great scientist the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Ukraine could become the most advanced one in the Soviet Union, with science becoming a real productive force due to the targeted basic research performed in the Academy. B. Malitsky informed about the books devoted to the 100th anniversary of the NAS of Ukraine, contributed by Dobrov Institute staff.
