«We Set Ourselves the Task of Making the ”Bricks“ that Will Become the Basis of Our Ukrainian State» (interview with I.R. Alekseenko, the General Director of Naukova dumka publishing house of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the occasion of centenary of the publishing house)

Abstract

Ihor Alexeienko, director of “Naukova Dumka” publishing house (PH) since 1994, spoke about the most prominent editions and their preparation, phases of the publishing house evolution over the three latest decades, about ways of sustaining the high-performing effort of PH amidst the adversities of today, caused by chronic underfunding of R&D and compounded by the war.   І. Alexeienko says that the PH mission, apart from book publishing, includes the formation of Ukrainian terminology. Its evidence is in the preparation of a series of Russian-Ukrainian terminological glossaries on natural and social sciences, organization of thematic All-Ukrainian conferences “The Ukrainian scientific terminology”, elaborating of the academic “Glossary of the Ukrainian language” in 20 volumes, 4-volune Latin-Ukrainian vocabulary, 6-volume etymological vocabulary. Another PH mission is publishing of a new standardized version of the Ukrainian orthography given that several PHs have already displayed online a piece of unrefined material as an official version of the Ukrainian orthography. І. Alexeienko named top-five famous and remarkable editions of “Naukova dumka” dated from the independence era, with pointing out that editions in social sciences and humanities is a priority for PH, given the importance of understanding the complexities of transformations in the public consciousness in the challenging times faces by Ukraine.
