Abstract
The article presents the materials of the presentation “Why we are not Springer: the experience of the Publishing House (PH) ‘Akademperiodyka’ of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine”, which was presented by Anna Radchenko, Candidate of Geological Sciences, on November 28, 2023 at the Institute of Physics of Condensed Systems of the NAS of Ukraine during the round table “Scientific periodicals in Ukraine”. A thorough analysis of the main indicators of activity, historical and chronic data of the publisher Springer is given. The main stages of its development and transformation, the key principles of functioning in today’s conditions are presented. Thus, the company with more than 180 years of history is a business model characterized by almost two billion euros in annual revenue, in which one magazine has 30 editors and 250 involved reviewers. In addition, by actually opening less than 40 % of published articles, Springer positions itself as an open access company. The path of evolution of the PH “Akademperiodyka” of the NAS of Ukraine from a specialized printing house of scientific journals to the only scientific publishing house in the country is characterized. The common aspects and tasks of the Springer and Akademperiodyka publishing houses are shown, and their disagreements and differences are emphasized. The features by which PH “Akademperiodyka” differs from Springer, in addition to the budget and the number of employees, is that our publishing house is not an independent business project, the owner of a publishing house, the owner and publisher of scientific journals. In addition, working within the framework of the Journal Support Program, the scope and contents of which are approved by the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine every year, Akademperiodyka has no regulatory and financial basis for long-term planning. Undoubtedly, existing common features are characterized by the fact that the main task of a publisher of scientific literature is the production of high-quality, modern, verified content that has passed all levels of professional publishing processing, paying attention to review and editing, compliance with global requirements and current state standards. PH “Akademperiodika” makes great eff orts to constantly raise the professional level of employees, supports open access initiatives and the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals. The key aspects of the further work of the PH “Akademperiodyka” of the NAS of Ukraine are summarized and presented.
