The paper analyses changes in birth-rate in Donetsk region during 2005–2010 taking into account the state social policy. The relationship between birth-rate and functioning of general educational establishments is considered, as well as optimization of a school network, namely schools closure, as a measure which is applied in the educational sphere because of the reform and which is aimed at reducing the costs for maintenance of general schools and enhancement of learning quality. The author has made a forecast of optimization effects taking into account the present birth-rate and demographic situation.
