The article commemorates Viktor Bariakhtar, an outstanding theoretical physicist and administrator, academician of the NAS of Ukraine (1978), vice president of the NAS of Ukraine (1989—1993), chief vice president of the NAS of Ukraine (1993—1998), Hero of Ukraine (2010); a scientist who not only enriched the science with world-class results of basic research, but educated many disciples. It was in 80s of the past century that V. Bariakhtar founded a scientific school in physics of magnetism and theory of solid body in Kyiv. The article contains a recollection of Borys Paton about V. Bariakhtar, details on biography and career path of V. Bariakhtar as a scientist. It informs that research works of V. Bariakhtar are related with theoretical physics, physics of magnetic phenomena, physics of solid body, and environmental problems caused by the disaster at Chernobyl nuclear power plant. An extensive review of V. Bariakhtar’s achievements in the aforementioned fields of physics is made. The teaching activities of the scientist, aimed at selecting and training of gifted youth for successful work in theoretical physics, are mentioned.
