Abstract

Mykola Korneichuk is a distinguished Ukrainian mathematician, doctor in physics and mathematics (1964), professor (1965), academician of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine (1997). He was a student of the mathematical department of Dnipropetrovsk State University. In 1955, when M. Korneichuk obtained a diploma with excellence, he entered the post-graduate course at the department of mathematical analysis at Dnipropetrovsk State University. After the post-graduate study, he was left at this University department, worked as research assistant (1958—1960), associated professor (1960—1962), department head (1963—1974). In 1963 he defended a doctor’s thesis. In 1972 M. Korneichuk was elected correspondent member of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Ukraine (ASSU), in 1974 he came to Kyiv, where he presided, until 2001, over the department of geometric theory of functions and topology (the department of approximation theory since 1987) in the Institute of Mathematics of the ASSU. M. Korneichuk prepared eight doctors of sciences and 30 candidates of sciences, he was deputy editor of “Ukrainian Mathematical Journal”, member of the editorial board of “East Journal on Approximations”, and of the edition “Works of the Institute of Mathematics of the NAS of Ukraine”. He died on July, 22, 2003.

Volodymyr Peretz is a distinguished literary scholar, doctor of Russian literature (1902), professor (1903), academician of the St.-Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1914), academician of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (1919). He graduated from the St.-Petersburg University in 1893, defended Master thesis in 1990, and thesis for doctor of Russian literature in 1902. V. Peretz came to Kyiv in 1903. He took the professor’s position at Kyiv University, at the department of Russian language and literature, in 1903—1914. V. Peretz was elected acting member of the philological section at Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv in 1908, acting member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 1919. V. Peretz founded the society of scholars on the Ukrainian history of writing and language in Petrograd in 1921. In 1934, V. Peretz was arrested by the Commissariat of Internal Affairs and brought for investigation to Moscow as a member of the counterrevolutionary fascist organization “Russian National Party”. He was rehabilitated in 1957. V. Peretz is the author of more than 300 works on literature studies, source studies, historiography, archeology, bibliography, of which more than 100 written during his stay in Kyiv (1903—1914). V. Peretz traced the influence of Ukrainian poems and folk poesy of the 17th and the 18th centuries on the Russian literature, explored two types of old Ukrainian poem writing, made pioneering studies of rhythms of Taras Shevchenko’s poems.
