In Ukraine, the development of livestock and crop production is uneven, with a significant predominance of the share of crop production in the sectoral structure. Such deformation is accompanied by non-compliance with environmental requirements of agricultural production. Amidst the growing negative impact of climate change, this has resulted in a decrease in the natural resource potential of the industry. The situation is significantly worsened by considerable soil and water pollution due to ongoing full-scale hostilities. In view of this, it is advisable to introduce in Ukraine the principles of circular agriculture, which will contribute to reducing the negative environmental impact of production, efficient use of resources, and enhancing the resilience of agricultural activities.
The advisability of implementing a closed-cycle agricultural production in Ukraine by integrating crop and livestock production on the principles of circularity is substantiated, as well as assessing the likely consequences of this process for the domestic market and exports. The presence of a stable trend in the agricultural sector of Ukraine towards a reduction in livestock population and a narrowing of its feed base, a decrease in output, is confirmed. At the same time, the existing potential of livestock production indicates the possibility of its restoration, in particular on the principles of circularity. The assessments conducted made it possible to establish the likely scales of production, consumption and export of the main types of agricultural products in Ukraine, provided that national livestock production develops on the basis of environmental friendliness (with appropriate transformation of the crop structure) and circularity (with rationalization of feed management). Therefore, the transition of Ukrainian livestock production to circular principles is predicted to allow keeping significantly more livestock, focusing on feeding it with roughage and green fodder, and thereby significantly reducing the amount of grain used for this. Farmers' opportunities to apply organic fertilizers should also expand.
