SCIENTIST, PRACTITIONER, AND WISE TEACHER: IN MEMORY OF VASYL PYLA

Vasyl Pyla is a well-known Ukrainian scholar, manager, and founder of a scientific school. The paper focuses on description of his life path, creative advances and transformation of scientific interests. Professional knowledge in the area of forestry sector have determined his interest in the systemic analysis and justification of prospects for the development of the forest sector and timber industry, with an emphasis on their rational territorial organization and in connection with the evaluation of productive forces. Later, these scientific developments and acquired practical experience have been used in solving problems of planning and targeting of comprehensive development of the economy, determination efficiency of production and identification of inter-industry relations, protection and restoration of ecosystems, and economic regulation at macro- and meso-levels. With the collapse of the USSR and the degradation of the economic sphere, his attention was focused on the issues of stimulating the development of regions, fostering of creation and development of special economic zones and priority development areas, and cross-border and inter-regional cooperation. 40 years of his life have been devoted to the leading economic science institution of Ukraine – the Scientific and Research Economic Institute. An author of more than 200 publications and 70 scientific reports on applied projects, and co-author of numerous regulatory acts, Prof. Pyla gave lectures, collaborated with leading universities of Ukraine. He trained a number of specialists and followers.
