Abstract

The article deals with the history of the 145 years of activity of the oldest Ukrainian scientific organization - the Shevchenko Scientific Society, which today, as one and a half centuries ago, directs its scientific potential, first of all, to the revival and modernization of the Ukrainian nation and Ukrainian statehood. It is stressed that Shevchenko scientific societies outside of Ukraine now, as in the past, remain as unifying spiritual centers of the Ukrainian diaspora, but now they are also becoming envoys of Ukrainian studies in the western world. The achievements of the Shevchenko Scientific Society for the whole period of its existence are analyzed, the current state, prospects and directions of development in Ukraine are highlighted.
