Abstract

In the article we analyzed a simple and effective way to determine how wide a circle of authors of a periodical devoted to any subject area is. This can assess the level of monopolization of a periodical or their thematic group. Using Herfindahl–Hirschman Index we assessed the level of monopolization of scientific periodicals that is quantitative distribution of authors of periodicals by their affiliation (official place of work). Example calculations were made for scholarly journals (2015–2017 issues) that have NAS of Ukraine and scientific institutions of Section of Social Sciences and Humanities of NAS of Ukraine (economics, history, philosophy and law, literature, linguistics and art departments) among their founders. It is proved that periodicals of NAS of Ukraine that highlight research issues in the area of social sciences and humanities are heavily monopolized by their founding institutions.
