Abstract

The Nobel Prize winners in Physiology and Medicine for 2015 became parasitologist William Campbell, biochemist Satoshi Omura and biologist Youyou Tu. Half of the prize was awarded for the discovery of avermectin - a new class of medications contributed to combat with river blindness disease (onchocerciasis) and lymphatic filariasis, and also were shown to be effective against other parasitic diseases. The second half of the prize was conferred to a Chinese researcher for the discovery of artemisinin - the medicine that is of great help for patients suffering from malaria. Youyou Tu became the first Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and Medicine from China.
