Abstract

The report analyzes the modern configuration of the languages of the Shtokavian diasystem (Serbian, Croatian, Bosniak/Bosnian, and Montenegrin) on the linguistic map of the Balkan Peninsula, the features of their status and functioning after the collapse of the SFRY. The proposed study can be considered a certain step in studying the global question: whether languages “move” borders or shifts on the geopolitical map contribute to changing the linguistic landscape. An attempt is made to determine what lessons Ukraine could learn from the Balkan experience and how the trends prevailing in the Ukrainian language may affect its modern development.
