The first Department of Mineralogy in Ukraine: history of creation and influence on the development of mineralogical science and geological practice

The article briefly describes the history and prerequisites for the establishment of the first Ukrainian Department of Mineralogy, which was founded in 1834 within the structure of St. Volodymyr University. Its role in the formation and active development of mineralogical science in Ukraine is analyzed. It is shown that the Department of Mineralogy and Geognosy of Kyiv University was a leader in the study of the subsoil of Ukraine and the organizer of geological practice until the emergence of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the Ukrainian Geological Committee.
