The political events of Ancient Rus in the first half of the ХІ century, which are connected with the increase of the role of the Polotsk princedom are discussed. It emphasizes the importance of the campaign of Polotsk prince Bryachislav against Novgorod in 1021. The content and historiography of the campaign are described; one of the unresolved, basic problems of this event — the problem of Bryachislav’s druzhyna (armed force) — is highlighted.
