National Network of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in Ukraine

The article gives brief overview of the 40-year long activity of the National Committee of Ukraine for UNESCO Program on Man and the Biosphere, which is responsible for the realization of this program in Ukraine, in particular, related to the creation of the national network of UNESCO biosphere reserves. Specific emphasis is laid on the significance of Ukrainian biosphere reserves for forming the new regional vision of interaction between the solution of the environmental preservation problems and sustainable development, the optimization of biological species’ diversity as well as landscape ecosystems. The functions and tasks of the Ukrainian biosphere reserves are discussed. Peculiar features of specific biosphere reserves of Ukraine are outlined in detail. Priority tasks of the “Man and the Biosphere” program realization in the context of reaching the global goals of sustainable development are defined.
