Abstract

The imbalance in the structure of production, moral and physical obsolescence and depreciation of fixed assets in the economy, inefficient use of energy and water resources lead to excessive use of energy, which requires a substantial change for the imports (more than 50% of demand). This results in dependence of basic industries of Ukraine, primarily fuel and energy complex, on exporting countries of fuels and, accordingly, in the increasing threat of energy security. In addition, it is contrary to the principles of sustainable development, announced at a UN conference in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Ukraine needs more active implementation of measures to radically improve energy efficiency of its economy.
