In the article, the author, using some historical parallels, reflects on the role of science in general and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in particular in the postwar reconstruction of the country, on what the Academy as the highest scientific organization needs to do to prove to the state and society its ability to perform the complex tasks for the transition of Ukrainian economy to the innovative track of development, and concludes that it is impossible to create a modern economy without the revival of knowledge-intensive industry. According to the author, the reform of the scientific sector will be successful only after formulating its strategic goals, defining staged tasks, its deadlines and sources of funding, as well as a clear idea of what we want to get as a result.
