To the 50th anniversary of the Man and the Biosphere UNESCO Programme

Abstract

This article provides a brief overview on the history of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) and its 50 years of activity, achievements of National Committee of Ukraine for the period from 1973 until 2021. The following point is emphasized: the importance of biosphere reserves in the formation of new understanding of the relationship between solving environmental problems and sustainable development, conservation of biological and landscape diversity. Specific features of particular UNESCO reserves in Ukraine, their history and functions are described. The main tasks and prospects of the national network of UNESCO biosphere reserves in Ukraine are defined.
