Abstract

The work involved the immobilization of a water-soluble short-chain chitosan oligosaccharide onto a fibrous textile matrix of activated carbon with varying volumetric capacities via sorption, resulting in a carbon composite contai- ning chitosan that exhibits antibacterial properties (CCAC) . The presence of chitosan oligosaccharide in the compo- site structure was confirmed by a nitrogen peak against the background of carbon and oxygen lines of the carbon matrix in the spectra determined using the point element analysis module of a scanning electron microscope . The dependence of precipitated chitosan amount on the volumetric capacity of carbon matrix and on chitosan initial concentration in the solution was revealed . The immobilization of chitosan on the surface of the carbon matrix was confirmed by its presence in the samples 24 hours after immersion in water . Changes in the bulk volume of the initial samples and the samples after COS application were studied using the desiccator method via benzene vapor absorp- tion . It was found that after immobilization of chitosan on the carbon matrix, a significant residual sorption capacity of CCAC is retained, which will allow it to absorb chemical contaminants and pathogenic microorganisms when used in water purification filters . The microstructure of the composite material samples and the location of chitosan aggregates on their surface was investigated using a scanning electron microscope . Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis has proven that mineral inclusions on the surface of CCAC microfibers are the chitosan particles of ~200 nm in size . Obtained composite, due to zones of increased chitosan concentration and the developed porous surface, is promi- sing for removal of toxic substances, biological agents, viruses and bacteria when used as a basic sorbent regenerative component in filters for emergency purification of drinking water in field conditions .
