NiCx nano-sized carbide (x <0.33) with the sphalerite-type defect cubic structure (a = 0.3549 nm) is synthesized by the mechanochemical alloying of the mixture of a nickel powder and multiwalled carbon nanotubes in a highenergy planetary ball mill. It is shown that the destruction of nanotubes occurs at the mechanochemical processing of the charge, and the carbon atoms partially fill the tetrahedral voids in the nickel crystal lattice as a result of the diffusion. It is also shown that the allotropic form of the carbon component of the Ni—C charge (graphite or carbon nanotubes) significantly affects the nature of the interaction between the initial components and, consequently, the phase composition of the final synthesis product.
