Thermal power plants as elements of the regulation system of the energy system of Ukraine

Abstract

The report examines some of the general and economic issues of power industry in order to better understand the role of thermal energy, in particular coal-fired generation, along with other sources of electricity generation during the transition to "carbon-free" energy. It is shown that in order to ensure acceptable electricity prices, renewable energy sources and new natural gas based regulating capacities should be introduced gradually, using existing solid-fuel thermal power plants and combined heat-power plants to balance the weighted average prices and to regulate power system load modes. The results of the work of the Thermal Energy Technology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the scientific and technical support of ensuring the reliability and range of load regulation of thermal power plants in wartime, the development and implementation of science-intensive technical solutions for the conversion of boiler units of TPPs and CHPPs, of medium- and small-scale boilers of industrial thermal CHPPs to biomass and sub-bituminous coal are presented.
