У статті досліджено процес зародження, формування та еволюції правового статусу дійсних членів (академіків) і членів-кореспондентів НАН України починаючи з 1918 р. і до сьогодення. Простежено основні етапи його розвитку в період Української Держави, УНР часів Директорії, радянської України та незалежної Української держави на сучасному етапі. Правовий статус дійсних членів та членів-кореспондентів, вироблений столітньою практикою, має певну національну специфіку, але в загальних рисах ґрунтується на принципах, спільних для наукового товариства більшості країн світу. Окрему увагу в статті приділено аналізу шляхів його вдосконалення та перспективам розвитку.
