Transgenic crops in world and Ukraine

Abstract

The history of transgenic (genetically modified — GM) cultivars of agricultural plants, their appearance and studying is presented. The reason for public organization opposition to cultivation and extension of transgenic cultivars in leading agricultural countries is analyzed. A number of new GM-crops with properties unachievable by traditional methods is named. The data concerning the organic farming and its productiveness are presented. The author points the advantages of genetically modified cultivars: fewer expenses on growing, fewer usage of pesticides, fuels and lubricants, fewer emission of carbon dioxide. The information about transgenic plants produced in Ukraine is shown.
